2023 WORKSHOPS
Mark Making + Movement – Mark making is an important part of an artist’s visual vocabulary. Taught by guest instructor Kim Bernard, this course will explore gestural movements and mark making as they relate to your work. Kim will help each student discover a mark as unique as your own fingerprint.
Collage – In this workshop we will experiment with paper and wax, noting the way that certain papers become translucent and pliable when saturated with medium. Using tacking irons and heat guns, students will incorporate fabric, paper, monoprints, and drawings to create collages. Encaustic paint and Pigment Stick will be used as final layers.
Embedding Objects + Pours – We will explore three different types of pours, including the pour over, pouring to create reliquaries to contain meaningful objects, and pouring to build at thick smooth surface.
Encaustic Cyanotype – Taught by guest instructor Michele Randall, this workshop explore cyanotypes, a camera-less photography method that creates dark blue prints. Learn how to prepare photo-sensitive solutions, design transparencies, and create depth through double exposure. Embedding papers with encaustic medium will be demonstrated along with the use of India ink and PanPastel.
Encaustic + Photography – An introductory workshop to working with photographs and encaustic. Proper materials for printing and mounting photographs will be demonstrated, as well as the incorporation of Pigment Stick, graphite, and mica powder.
Incorporating Text – Words shape and alter the way we understand what we are looking at. Whether words are bold and obvious or hidden and obscure, text reveals the ideas and stories behind our work. In this class we will use India ink, drawing materials, subtractive tools, collage, and Pigment Stick to create works that explore narration.
Leaf Stencils + Organic Materials – In this session you will learn how to use fresh leaves to create stencils and the best ways to embed organic materials and other found matter into your work.
Mini Monoprinting Workshop – Use your hot plate to pull unique encaustic prints that can be enhanced with pigment stick or metallic leaf and then mounted on panels.
Metal | Metallic – I will share all my tricks to combining small found objects, nails, and other types of metal with wax. We’ll also work with metallic encaustic paint and Pigment Sticks, real and artificial metal leaf to emphasize sheen and add iridescence to your work.
Wax Resist – Using a special paper that can be incorporated easily into encaustic, we will incorporate wax markings, gestural strokes, stamping, folding, batik and resist dyeing to achieve dynamic results that are uniquely your own.
Yoga – Start your day with gentle to moderate yoga and mindful meditation designed to leave you feeling strong and grounded. Mats, straps, and blocks provided. All levels welcome. 5 yoga sessions count as one workshop.
